The Elonex ONE (also known as ONE) was a netbook computer marketed to the education sector by Elonex. The ONE's operating system was called Linos, based on Linux kernel 2.6.21,[1] and the device had Wi-Fi connectivity, Ethernet networking, a solid-state hard drive, two USB ports and weighed less than 1 kg.[2]

The ONE was described by Elonex at the time as the cheapest laptop in the UK at a retail price of £99 in the UK. Its official unveiling took place on 28 February 2008 at The Education Show at the NEC in Birmingham[3] and a shipping date of June 2008 was announced.[4] Customer deliveries started in August 2008.[5]

In February 2008, Elonex stated their vision was for 'every pupil to have their own laptop' to 'improve computer literacy across the nation'. Elonex aligned the cost of the ONE with the aims of the DCSF closing the achievement gap between those from low-income and disadvantaged backgrounds and their peers. To support this initiative Elonex committed to 'donate 1 ONE to underprivileged children from disadvantaged areas for every hundred sold'.[6]

The Elonex Sliver is a mixed bag, but while it does have its issues, if you're after an attractive machine for browsing the web and writing the odd email, this is a great option.

Hardware[edit]

The hardware specifications were published on 28 February 2008.[7] The 'LNX Code 8' is also the CPU used in the Elonex One+, One T, and One T+ ultra-low-cost notebook computers.[8] While Elonex declined to release information on the designer and manufacturer of the processor,[9] Engadget reported that the One could be a rebranded Fontastic A-View laptop,[10] which would make the processor an x86-compatible 300 MHz Aday5F.[11]

The ONE is similar to the A-View or AW-300A-BOOK products from Aware.[12] They use an Aday 5F-300 MHz X86processor. An earlier Aware product the AW-150 is sold in the US for $199 as the MiTYBOOK.[13][14]

Elonex revealed further notebook models at Computex in June 2008.[15][16][17] Elonex introduced the One successor at IFA 2009. It's a smartbook based on ARM 11 CPA and Windows CE OS.[18]

The Elonex ONEt is a netbook computer marketed to the education sector in the UK by Elonex. Inspired by the OLPC initiative, the low cost of the ONE, the ONEt[1] and similar devices,[2][3][4] made this subnotebook seem an attractive proposition for educators seeking to provide every child with a highly functional laptop computer. However initial ONEt trials by educators claimed that the lack of security, specifically the absence of any password protection at start-up, put personal information at risk, making it unsuitable for use in a school environment.[5] It was released in September 2008, on sale to the general public, marketed as an upgrade to the ONE. It has Wi-Fi connectivity, a solid-state hard drive, three USB ports and an SD card slot.

Operating System[edit]

The Elonex OneT has a Linux (mipsel) based operating system, and the included software comprises Sky Word (Abiword 2.4.5), Sky Table (Gnumeric 1.6.3), a PDF viewer (ePDFView 0.1.6), Scientific Calculator, Dictionary, File Manager, Web Browser (BonEcho/Firefox), Email client (Sylpheed), Sky Chatting (Pidgin), FBReader, Media Player (xine based), Xip Flash Player, Image Gallery, Paint Brush, and Sound Recorder.

Although access to the root filing system isn't possible through the included file manager it is possible to get console access as user root by installing the Xterm application from the CnM Lifestyle website.[7] The CnM Lifestyle notebook is exactly the same as the Elonex OneT and so all applications on this page can be installed.(To browse the raw file system, the web browser will respond appropriately to being told to load file://127.0.0.1; obviously, this is read-only access.)

Similar devices[edit]

The ONEt is similar to the CnM Mini-book from Maplin Electronics, Alpha 400 product from Bestlink[3][8] or the Trendtac EPC 700[4] or the Skytone Alpha 400. Those devices are basically all the same and only have different OEM names.
